The horse's diet has finished changing over to a new, lower sugar ration. The Blue Seal Vintage Senior, Triple Crown Senior and Blue Seal Hay Pellets are no longer part of his diet. His diet is now Blue Seal Vintage Performance LS, Triple Crown "Safe Starch" and a beet pulp mash. The fattier foods will be introduced soon for winter weight.

Grain is currently being changed to a new, lower sugar ration. Currently, his summer diet is made up of 1/2 - 2/3 grazing on fields seeded with Blue Seal's "Equi-Graze" mix and processed grains and forage: Blue Seal Vintage Senior, Triple Crown Senior and Blue Seal Hay Pellets. In the winter, no hay is given due to old, worn teeth and the processed grain and forage is adjusted to maintain weight.
The new, lower sugar ration changes: Blue Seal Vintage Performance LS will be replacing the Vintage Senior, Triple Crown "Safe Starch" will replace the Blue Seal Hay Pellets and a custom fatty feed of my own concoction (which I have used in the past) will replace the Triple Crown Senior and will be fed, as needed, to maintain weight. This change in feed is to reduce Non-Structured Carbohydrates as much as possible. He is not a sensitive horse, per se, but he is older and therefore his system should be assumed less resiliant.
This change seems important for all horses, if not, critical, since many studies indicate how unnecessary these sugars are for a horse's diet and recent studies, indicate laminitis is actually caused by a diabetic like response to sugar in the horse's diet.
